The new setup

August 27, 2007

5 weeks ago I changed platform to the wonderful Apple environment and the OS X system. Halleluja!! Besides being awesome to look at (and touch) I really enjoy all the things that are new to a former pc user. Things such as the ‘dashboard’ and the floating ‘Dock’ are two things that first comes to my mind. I experience other cool functions every time i open the delicious 15″ wonder.

But this post is really about the hardware setup. The foremost reason for this pricy purchase is the screen. Rob Galbraith seems to to be confident with it – so I am too. I want to be able to do a fairly job optimizing and post-processing the photos in the field. Today only few laptop screens can be calibrated to a true and neutral result. This 15″ beast can do the job, not to a 100%, but close to. I can show the photos to my client and then continue working with them back home on my 20″ Lacie 120 monitor.

December 2nd 2007: Since I’ve wrote this post I’ve experienced that the Lacie 120 monitor can’t work together with my mac. Well, it can – but the monitor can’t be used as a widescreen. To bad! Anyone interested in buying a great monitor?

Next up I just have to admit that I adore the Apple user interface! There’s nothing else to it! It’s really an absolute joy to open up and use this miracle. I experience that applications open up faster than with my old pc . And closing a program take something like one second! The machinery is dead silent even when working with several applications at the same time.
Call me a snob – but the pc was paid and now was time to do the ‘jump out of the closet’.

A messy picture of the setup

The need for storage
I surfed around and ended up buying two 500 gb Western Digital My Book Premium Edition external harddisks. A firewire cable connection and we’re up and running. Pretty easy. One last thing – and maybe you can help me: I’m always on the lookout for an easier and a better time effective workflow. I need a piece of software for archiving. Iview Media Pro or Fotostation? Witch one is the better?

Opera soundslide show

August 21, 2007

I was in the local park this sunday. The Royal Opera was giving a taste from the upcoming season. Thousands of people sat down and heard classical music from some of the best in Copenhagen.
I used my Edirol stereo recorder to record audio for a soundslide show. In my effort to get better at this, I would like to hear your critique and comments. Turn on our sound, take a look and let me know what you think.

Well done, Nikon!

August 17, 2007

I just saw this clever advertising campaign from Nikon. They gave 200 Nikon D40 cameras to the people of Georgetown, South Carolina – soon to be called Picturetown.

Now, the D40 might not be the newest model. But to me, this is a clever way to sell a camera. It’s easy, not an especially expensive campaign and we all see real people use the camera. The folks in the video are wild about the camera – of course – and they are all sorts of ”everyday people”. Take a look: http://stunningnikon.com/picturetown/
