The new setup

August 27, 2007

5 weeks ago I changed platform to the wonderful Apple environment and the OS X system. Halleluja!! Besides being awesome to look at (and touch) I really enjoy all the things that are new to a former pc user. Things such as the ‘dashboard’ and the floating ‘Dock’ are two things that first comes to my mind. I experience other cool functions every time i open the delicious 15″ wonder.

But this post is really about the hardware setup. The foremost reason for this pricy purchase is the screen. Rob Galbraith seems to to be confident with it – so I am too. I want to be able to do a fairly job optimizing and post-processing the photos in the field. Today only few laptop screens can be calibrated to a true and neutral result. This 15″ beast can do the job, not to a 100%, but close to. I can show the photos to my client and then continue working with them back home on my 20″ Lacie 120 monitor.

December 2nd 2007: Since I’ve wrote this post I’ve experienced that the Lacie 120 monitor can’t work together with my mac. Well, it can – but the monitor can’t be used as a widescreen. To bad! Anyone interested in buying a great monitor?

Next up I just have to admit that I adore the Apple user interface! There’s nothing else to it! It’s really an absolute joy to open up and use this miracle. I experience that applications open up faster than with my old pc . And closing a program take something like one second! The machinery is dead silent even when working with several applications at the same time.
Call me a snob – but the pc was paid and now was time to do the ‘jump out of the closet’.

A messy picture of the setup

The need for storage
I surfed around and ended up buying two 500 gb Western Digital My Book Premium Edition external harddisks. A firewire cable connection and we’re up and running. Pretty easy. One last thing – and maybe you can help me: I’m always on the lookout for an easier and a better time effective workflow. I need a piece of software for archiving. Iview Media Pro or Fotostation? Witch one is the better?

Impressive results from the Nokia N73

I’ve had the Nokia N73 for a month now. I went out and bought it for the sole reason to be able to shoot some photos while staying on Manhattan, and send them back home to a website with a short update about my stay.

Though it’s ‘just’ a camera phone, the Carl Zeiss Tessar 2.8/5.6 3.2 mpixel lens does a really good job! I’s got autofucus and a small flash. The main camera (yes, there is two) is positioned behind a neat little slide-away cover at the back of the camera. The secondary camera is placed on the upper front side above the screen. This camera is intended for the kind of snapshots of one self with a friend while holding it out in a stretched arm. However, the secondary camera is of a poor quality.

When looking at the pictures the large screen is an absolute pleasure! It’s big, bright and clear, and when using the little joystick moving around in the menues is easy. That said, the menues is (well, to me) overwhelming. I often give up trying to find some tools or to configure some personal settings.

Nokia has teamed up with photoshare website Flickr.com, and that is cool! So, “Shoot and share your photos on Flickr in just one click”. Read all about it here: http://www.flickr.com/nokia

Nokia is about to launch a new model these days: The N95. And with a wooping 5 mpixel Carl Zeiss lens I can only imagine that it must be awesome!
